Hello Again!

Hope you are all enjoying the change in temperature, and the perfect change in colours across Cumbria and the Lake District National Park. Autumn is well and truly here, an amazing time of year to be a portrait and wedding photographer.

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of spending the morning with this lovely couple, Dan and Jess. One perfectly suited match, with endless interests and hobbies they both share together. They have been together around two years and have just entered a new chapter in their journey together, having been engaged for a couple of months. 

Due to be wed late next year, here in Cumbria, I loved the job of capturing them both as a couple to cerebrate their engagement. After chatting with Dan a few days before the shoot, it soon became clear that these two had a passion for an active lifestyle and the outdoors, especially the Lake District National Park. They were also pretty much up for anything in terms of ideas and locations. I suggested a circular walk around the ever popular, Buttermere. 

I love to mix up locations either by foot or car to create some variety throughout the shoot regarding the colour, light and aesthetic. Dan and Jess are into all things outdoors, hiking, swimming, running and cycling. So, lets go out in the stunning Lake District and grab some portraits!

An extra exciting shoot for me as it was chance to shoot with a new set-up. I’ve recently changed from Nikon to Sony, whilst trying out a selection of prime lenses rather than the zooms. Gear for today:

Lenses: Sony 85mm 1.8 / Sigma 35mm 1.4 / Sigma 135mm 1.8

As the weather was looking bright on the forecast whilst Dan and Jess had to travel back down south in the early afternoon, we had an early 07:00am start to capture the morning light peaking over the Cumbrian fells to the east, such as Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks. 

We started by the shore on the west end of Buttermere. Unfortunately the clouds were out in force and no early sun-rise light was to be had, not yet anyways. However, there was plenty of interest and drama in the sky. I like to start a shoot with new clients pretty simple and straight forward, without too much direction and camera lenses up in their faces.

I for one hate my picture being taken, so I understand the nerves at the start of a photography shoot. I tend to find couples relax as we go, generating a more authentic result. So I start easy and see how the shoot unfolds. 

The light was starting to warm up at this point, creating a soft colour temperature for the portraits. I was confident the sun would start to burn through the clouds to create some interesting opportunities for these two, and myself as a portrait photographer. The colours were a treat within the forests. 

As we ventured further along the lake shore the light started to beam in and out of the clouds. One moment the sun was out, and back in as fast as it appeared. A challenging prospect for a photographer to work in varying conditions with light, as well as capturing a moment, before it passes. That’s what being a portrait and wedding photographer is all about, being ready to capture a moment, emotion or change in light! 

Dan And Jess seemed to be enjoying themselves and really started to relax around the camera, which is hugely important for myself, as a portrait and wedding photographer. It is one thing appreciating my work, but being comfortable is a key element to a shoot, never more important than on a wedding day. My style is to capture moments as they happen, without being overly obtrusive to a couple on their big day. Engagement portraits gives us all a great chance to get to know each other and see how we work together, giving a couple an insight if I am the photographer for them.

Couple portrait photography requires some direction, which I try to keep to a minimum. Dan and Jess took it in their stride, with some results I am super happy with. We were rewarded for the early start with some striking light without anyone else around on the foot path around Buttermere.
